Lawngtlai, November 26, 2024 – The opening function of Road Safety Week 2024 was held today at Lawngtlai Bazar Areopagy at 7:30 a.m. The event was inaugurated by Pu C. Rongura, Executive Member in charge of the Transport Department, Lai Autonomous District Council, as the Chief Guest.
In his speech, Pu C. Rongura highlighted that while developed countries possess modern and advanced vehicles, Mizoram has only recently witnessed significant improvements in vehicle standards due to rapid progress and development. However, he pointed out that negligence and lack of discipline in handling vehicles result in tragic accidents, leading to a continuous loss of precious lives. He stressed the importance of observing *Road Safety Week* to instill the value of responsible driving and safety.
Key Highlights of His Speech:
1. Safety During Festive Seasons: As the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, he urged families to ensure their festivities are filled with happiness and safety. Drivers were encouraged to practice caution and responsibility, especially in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and passengers.
2. Proper Licensing and Rule Adherence: He emphasized the importance of obtaining driving licenses properly by following the rules and procedures. He noted that accidents often occur due to individuals bypassing these regulations.
3. Avoiding Drunken Driving: He strongly discouraged driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and urged drivers to exercise self-discipline to ensure their safety and that of others.
4. Awareness and Caution: He appealed to the public to remain vigilant while on the roads. Even when crossing streets or driving with children, caution is paramount. He also urged parents to avoid letting unlicensed and underage individuals drive vehicles.
5. Appreciation for Responsible Drivers: Pu C. Rongura expressed his admiration for responsible and conscientious drivers, urging others to follow their example for the benefit of the community and nation.
He also stressed the fact that the public in general also need to be aware of traffic around the especially if they are with children and while crossing roads.He also gave salute to the drivers of this community who do a great job in providing for the community.
He concluded by advising all drivers to ensure they are physically and mentally fit before driving. He also encouraged the use of safe driving practices, like proper vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic signals.
The event was chaired by Pu B. Zothanthuama, President of ZDU Sub-Hqrs Lawngtlai, while Pu J. Rohlupuia, Ex-President of ZDU, gave a vote of thanks. Pu L. Lalremkunga of the Mizoram Government Drivers Association addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of proper parking, road signals, and the necessity of maintaining discipline on the roads.
